Site was so lovely, all facilities great especially the shop but no hot water! Lukewarm showers which quickly turned cold. We also overheard other campers complaining about the same thing. Such a shame that this one (quite important!) element whilst camping was a let down to a perfect weekend

WING HALL REPLIES: Hello Louise, sorry the hot water wasn't up to scratch. We've had problems getting the levels right and the busy Bank Holiday exaggerated things! Sorry again - hope you return soon and see the improvement.

We have just spent the weekend at Wing Hall and found it to be very pleasant and relaxing. We did not have much luck on the fishing lake but that's sometimes how it goes. We would like apoligise for 'tripping' the electric on our first night and will make sure it doesn't happen again. I would recommend this site to others.

I had a lovely couple of nights staying down in field three with a small tent for just me and my son. Wonderful views over the valley drinking a mug of tea first thing.

Facilities were okay, they pot wash area could do with a better light at night in Field 3. The showers were hot but small space, luckily no queues but may have them when the site is busy. Well stocked shop and very friendly family staff.

I'll certainly be back again, although I may swap the view in Field 3 for Field 1.

We stayed the weekend of 6th September. The weather was superb and the campsite was charming with lots of chickens running around and even some chicks. The children loved it and so did we. The only concern that I have is that I rang and booked a few days before, giving my credit card details etc but when we arrived there was no record of my booking. Luckily there was room for us but we still don't know where our credit card details have gone.

WING HALL REPLIES: Hello Mark, apologies for the confusion with the booking. Due to issues with the old system, we now have an on-line booking form and secure payment system which makes for a much more efficient process! Your details were found after the weekend (wrong folder - human error!) and destroyed.

Glad you enjoyed your stay - hope to see you again.

Just spent a delightful weekend camping on pitch 74.

Loved the setting, the animals, especially the hens, gertie the pig and her piglets, and the norwegian forest cat.

Very friendly staff, nice food in the cafe, and thanks to the lady in the shop who dealt with my repeated requests to borrow the bicycle toolkit, with patience and a smile.

Showers and toilets are clean and convenient.

Will definitely be returning!!

Many Thanks

We have just returned from a five night stay at Wing Hall and have to say how much we enjoyed ourselves - right up our street!

We came down to visit the nearby Burghley Horse Trials and used the Stamford Tourist Office to find local campsites when we couldn't get in the Burghley campsite. We have now decided we wouldn't even try to get in there next year, we would just come to Wing Hall.

On reading some negative reviews, we were delighted to discover that in reality Wing Hall is wonderful! Perhaps not for those that want to be on a perfect "housing estate" type site, but for those that actually want to camp in a beautiful setting with peaceful fields and nature all around.

We were one of about three people on our field during the week. At weekend the fields filled up more, but it was still relaxing and everyone upheld the quiet rule.

The showers were always hot and clean, as was the washing up area. The toilets were well kept too. The on site farm shop was superb, and not expensive. I wouldn't bring half as much food with me next time, just shop there! On the Saturday evening we booked a table in the (very popular) bistro. The food was great, the staff were cheerful and attentive, and there was a wonderful young man playing guitar and singing - a very talented chap. All the staff we came in to contact with were polite and helpful.

Over all we had a wonderful time, were sad to leave, and most certainly will be back.

I enjoyed a lovely camping trip to Wing a few weeks ago and it was as expected on the website. I didn't read the reviews beforehand and Im glad I didn't as I think that would've put me off. However, I had a great time, and at the end of the day, you are camping and in the countryside, and I read comments about the staff which I think maybe irrelevant to camping as that really shouldn't affect your experience.

The farm shop was great, I suppose a little pricey, so wouldn't do all my food shopping there, but good for emergencies and treats.

The chickens were slightly annoying - they stole our raw chicken for our BBQ! But its the great outdoors so what do we expect!

I would like to stay again soon as I felt it was a great site, but would like to be able to specify that our pitch not be on the sloping part of the lower field as this was the only part of the stay I was dissatisied with. Although we appreciate the natural uneven surfaces, it was quite sloping and made sleeping rather difficult.

The toilet blocks, showers, washing up facilities etc were adequate and clean.

The pricing was fine for the stay and overall I felt that there was a nice atmosphere on site.

Hope to stay again soon!

Highly recommended from us; we stayed in a fantastic field perfect for camping with a young family with great views down the valley; the farm shop is high qaulity with reasonably priced local produce and there are either new toilets or well looked after ones. Only downside was despite trying never caught any fish!

We stayed at Winghall for a long weekend and it was great.Yes the pitches are not perfect but the views were stunning. The showers were always hot and the toilets are basic but fine. Its what you call proper camping. The shop is lovely and the band was great.Fresh eggs you can't beat them.We will visit again without question.

We stopped by for the first time today although we live close by. Lovely shop and a great coffee and cakes on the terrace whilst being entertained by the chickens. Great place, we will be back.

Firstly, I have to say that this camp site is set in a lovely setting with great views of the local landscape. We booked probably on the worst ever week with winds reaching 30 mph but our bear lake 6 stood up to it but the wind noise won in the end so we packed up early.
We both felt that the owners don't think too much about the campers as the wash rooms are not cleaned as much as I would like. The washing up sinks are not covered enough for rainfall to drop on your dishes or tree foliage as well, plus no concrete drive between fields as it took me three goes to get out and not killing the hens in a build up of speed to escape. We are Glampers to an extent, but all we want is a EHU and a clean place to wash up and bathe. What really frustrates us is this camp could be great with so little adjustment. Plus heed the warning don't ignore the no music sign there's a woman who drives by your tent with the window down to check, this is strictly a no music venue not even low volume as other sites! However, still a great place to camp weather permitting. So Wing Hall, you have a bit too many laws and if you want customer buy-in, do your part of the bargain, up the cleaning. I pay my cleaner £7.50 an hour for 3 hours week and I doubt it would take that long, after all we want to camp because we like camping, we are not people who like giving up our basic needs because we are campers..!

My observations are made with 30 years caravanning experience both in the UK & abroad.
My wife & I booked after reading the Wing Hall website. When we arrived we were the only caravan on the entire site. This site was not up to the standards we would expect for the fees charged. The grass was over 6 inches long, cutting did commence in readiness for a bank holiday week-end, it had certainly not been cut before this year. The roped off pitches were not cut at all and several had stinging nettles growing in them. The cut grass would certainly be trodden into any tent or caravan pitched during the bank holiday period. The pitches were very uneven and access difficult after rain. We left after 2 nights even though we had paid for 5 nights plus £5 card for electrics.
We will not be returning.

WING HALL REPLIES: Hello Tom. Sorry to hear you weren't happy with the site. The grass has been mad this year, and a constant battle to keep short. The caravan pitches are on level ground, and as you note you were the only ones there - so a move could have easily been arranged had you asked. We can only help if we know there's a problem! Hope you found a site more to your liking.

From: Mike Stevenson (Fri 11th May 2012 at 18:32)
Thanks to all at Wing Hall for a fantastic bank holiday (May 2012). The site is fantastic and all the children in our party had a great time. I like the fact that the pitches are not 100% flat and immaculately manicured - this is what camping is all about..please save me from spic and span club sites! The shop is also superb, as is the Veranda Cafe.

WING HALL REPLIES: Thanks Mike; glad you appreciate the nature of the sight. Hope to see you again.

Stayed first weekend in September. Really charming countryside camping, with a superb backdrop of the house and distant views - Great relaxed atmosphere about the place created by friendly staff and we felt quite at home for our youngsters to explore the grounds discovering the den in the woods, the big climbing tree and swing on their own while we enjoyed a beer on the lawn. Thank you to all at Wing for making it an enjoyable stay.

I would like to reply to your answer posted on your site from my comments from the August bank holiday. I was not complaining about your prices for the bank holiday. My issue was when I booked your site you quoted me a price for the Thursday and then the price for the other days [no problem] When we arrived you upped the rate to the weekend rates for the Thursday WHICH IS NOT A BANK HOLIDAY. The chemical waste was pointed out on our arrival by one of your staff. That was not the issue. The issue was just a drain to get rid of the waste water. The comments were to be constuctive to enhance peoples days away not to put down their experience

Wing Hall Replies: Thanks for the clarification! Hope to see you on site again in the future.

Just arrived home having spent 3 nights over the august bank holiday weekend. This was our first trip away without children and dogs, just my husband and I in our 8 birth tent....heaven.
We had read reviews on the site and were apprehensive although we tend to read between the lines!
We had an excellent time in the adult only field. Very quiet and private and close to toilets and showers using the path through the wooded area.
The shop was well stocked with a great selection of breads and cakes and the veranda cafe was a brilliant facility.
There was even a hair dryer to use in the freezer room/shed.
Well done for a fabulous campsite and we'll definitely be back soon.

“Great family camping”

29 Aug 2011 Antill
I'm disappointed to read the negative reviews left by unsatisfied guest. I can certainly appreciate some of the comments, however, the reality is that it's a camp site and camping is, in all it's glory,  ruffing it in a tent or caravan, if your lucky.
I have just returned from a long BH weekend that started on the Friday with my husband a two daughters, ages 7 & 8 and we had a wonderful time, especially the kids!  the atmosphere was fantastic, there were kids laughing, playing, running around, making new friends and thoroughly enjoying themselves.
Hubby and I felt relaxed and more importantly, we felt our children were safe, a big plus for us.
When Saturday arrived, the campsite started to fill up. By the time we returned from our bike ride at Rutland Waters, it was full, hence overflowing bins and blocked toilets.... All part of camping experience, it's  about family and spending time outdoors for us, and it was glorious!
We found the family who run the campsite so lovely and extremely welcoming. If there was an issue, they would bend over backwards to put it right and we felt comfortable knowing we could approach any of them if we, in fact had an issues, which we didn't.  Their home and grounds are lovely, charming and I can just imagine how it looked in it's heyday.

Many thanks to Wing Hall!! We look forward to our next family camp out, next time we're bring the whole gang!

just returned from bank holiday long weekend on arrival was told thursday was part of the bank holiday and had to pay the higher tariff.facilities tend to cater for tents rather than caravas as no waste water dissposal point tents on top of caravans even though we have paid top price with cold water showers at 8.30 on a morning. on the plus side we must compliment staff for the food and service in the cafe on sat night. 2/3 star site with 5 star prices

WING HALL REPLIES:

Hello Graham,

Sorry you weren't aware of the Bank Holiday rate for caravans - the rate is on our website from the start of the season. If your booking was on-line, the information was there.

As for the tent prices being on top of caravans, this is simply a per-person charge for the use of facilities as at most campsites.

All in all, sorry you found it expensive however we regularly review our prices with other sites in the area. We don't think you'd find anywhere for less on a Bank Holiday.

On a final note, these is a disposal point for caravans on site - the staff at reception would have been more than happy to point it out to you.

12th-14th August = Spent a lovely weekend at Wing Hall in the Adult Only field. This was a return visit for Sheila and Tony but was a first for Jon and I. We pitched our two tents together on an ample sized pitch BUT some consideration could have been given by other campers as a group pitched right on the access route to the toilet block/Veranda Cafe which whilst okay going round during daylight made it somewhat precarious in the dark. The site was clean and tidy but unfortunately not enough hot water was available although time indications are given for busy periods; We considered the facilities somewhat disjointed; Having to walk past the Veranda Cafe each morning with wash bag and towel in hand en route to the showers round the back isn't ideal both for customers of the Cafe and the sleepy campers. We would suggest a short cut from the Adult Only field via the toilet block although perhaps the visitors in the cottages might not be impressed. Whilst we appreciate there are changes afoot which will greatly improve the facilities, we weren't disappointed with our visit we just want to give honest feedback. Also, sorry to be a moaning milly, is there any chance you could higher the sink areas for washing up, they are very low and we weren't the only ones commenting. Overall Score 7.5/10

WING HALL REPLIES:

Thanks for the constructive feedback. As you note, facilities are being upgraded throughout - although it's a costly and time-consuming process! In response to feedback, three additional showers in the block closest to the adult-only field have been converted to complimentary showers and are now on-line, removing the need to walk past the cafe until fully prepared!

Apologies for the tents obstructing the path; they were moved, but perhaps should have been moved a little further.

Glad you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again!

From: Kevin Randle (Sat 2nd Jul 2011 at 12:03)
Interesting that my message will only appear after it has been approved!

We have just spent five nights at site. Very disappointed for many reasons.

The website does not accurately represent the site. There is no hot water in the toilet blocks, very unhygenic, no plugs in the sinks.

The washing up area is unusable as, once more, no hot water.

The pitches are uneven and very poorly maintained, the grass in the pitch we were directed to was about six inches long.

The toilets were reasonable but were not cleaned in the five days we spent on the site.

The website implies that there are fishing lakes on the site but we could not find them, despite asking directions.

The website also does not make it clear that the electric hook up is extra and, given the price of £16.50 per night for a pitch and two people this seems extortionate.

I did not find the 'owner/warden' particularly helpful and, on one occasion I thought her attitude was offensive.

I will not visit again, and, if this does not appear on the Wing Hall Comments I will post it on other caravan and camping sites.

WING HALL REPLIES:

Hello Kevin

Firstly, oh dear. We seem to have disappointed here. Let me address the issues you raise one-by-one:

1) Website / Hot Water: Toilet blocks now receive hot water since an issue with the boiler has been addressed. Plugs are frequently provided by are removed! (We keep trying!)

2) Washing Up Area does indeed have hot water although people leaving hot tapes running meant the system struggled to keep-up - hence the gradual introduction of the compression taps.

3) Pitch Condition: It really depends where you go and when; fields are cut once a week in preparation for the weekends, as you came mid-week, I'm afraid you may have missed this. Some pitches are indeed flatter than others but as some people like the privacy some of the less flat pitches afford, it's down to persona taste. We really do our best to help if guests let us know you're not happy with their pitch!

4) Toilets - Toilets are inspected everyday and are, as you note 'reasonable'. You'd have noticed a deterioration if they were not attended to.

5) Fishing - The lakes are indeed on-site and anyone in the shop will be able to advise where they are. However, they are for anglers and are not part of the camping facilities. We will make amends if this is not clear.

6) Electric is extra as it's an additional - optional (depending on availability) - facility.

7) The Warden - Sorry you felt that way.

8) Threat to Post Elsewhere - No comment.

From: Phil Johnson (Tue 14th Jun 2011 at 12:43)
Perfectly adequate for our two nights recently. Lovely views over the valley. Good clean facilities - toilets and showers. Pity about the sloping pitch allocated to us - 90c. Almost fell off our chairs and out of bed on more than one occasion. Would visit again though. Very good value for money.

Thank you R, L, B, Z, S, working so hard to make Wing hall the best camping and caravan facility in the UK!
The farm shop is amazing and the homemade cakes in the shop and cafe are the best I've had.
Sunday papers on the lawn with a beer is unbeatable.
So relaxing and only 2 hrs from London, does it get any better?
Happy happy campers! xx

Just had 5 days at Wing Hall in our caravan. We have a 40litre wastemaster which is not possible for either my husband or myself to lift onto the one waste point although we asked twice where we could dispose of the waste. The whole point of wastemasters is that it is on wheels to just run over a drain but this was impossible as no such drain exists at Wing Hall. I hope this will be addressed for future caravanners. We also found the electric on a card very unsatisfactory, both my daughter and I paid £5 for a card, hers was for a tent for 2 nights and neither of used either of them due to previous occupants of the pitches leaving their cards obviously because you couldn't use them up. No wonder there are so many notices around saying no refunds! I do hope this is also addressed. The position of Wing Hall is excellent, the farm shop very good as was the cafe, but I do feel you cater much more for campers rather than caravanners.

WING HALL REPLIES:

Hello, we appreciate the comment re:wastemaster but would suggest 40 litres is an enormous amount of waste to cart around anywhere.

On electric cards, we offer cards in GBP1 or GBP5 values, this should have been explained to you, although for five nights assuming use of the higher value is not unreasonable. The card system was introduced to encourage guests to take more care over electric use; this seems to confirm it works!

Your cards - if un-used - will be valid for any future visits.

Before coming to Wing Hall i was looking at some of the reviews from unbias websites. To be honest, i was slightly apprehensive about coming because some of the reviews were not great.
I am so pleased i came! There were three tents in our party and approximately 10 people who also thoroughly enjoyed it. Sunday evening there was a live band playing which was brilliant, children playing on the lawn with no worry of them disapearing because it it all enclosed. A really good weekend, would have been slightly better if we had better weather but unfortunately you can't control that!

The only bad point is the lack of hot water, but there are signs up saying that it is next years goal to achieve this.

The lady in the 4x4 really isnt as bad as the reviews say, she's lovely! I suppose she'll only have words with you if you break any of the simple rules i.e not making a loud noise at night because there are children asleep. Thanks again!!!!!!!

WING HALL replies:

So glad you enjoyed your stay!

And you're right... she's really not all that bad!

A site with great potential but was not the quiet haven in the countryside. Lots of families enjoying themselves : loud games, dogs barking, and a noisy access road driven too fast (which raised lots of dust).
The bookings and electric hookups need better management.
So if you are a family or group looking for that "summer camp" experience then highly recommended. If you are looking for peace and tranquility this is not the place.

WING HALL replies:

Hello, it sounds as if you came over a bank holiday or school holidays when the site can get busy. Most weekends and other weeks of the year, the site is sparsely populated and we rigorously enforce the noise curfew at night and the no music rule... the noise of people enjoying themselves isn't necessarily something we want to stop! ;-)

The dust due to the exceptionally warm weather is something we've been looking into and electric bookings are complicated on busy weekends by (some) dishonest people insisting they have bookings which can take time to resolve - sorry if you were affected by this and hope to see you again!

From: Jenny Wilson (Tue 3rd May 2011 at 00:19)
We have just returned from staying at Wing Hall in out camper van. Overall we enjoyed our stay and the views from our pitch were beautiful.
We know you are gradually improving the facilities and have a few suggestions which would have made our stay even more pleasurable -
* Shelves by the basins in the toilets and in the shower cubicles would be so useful. At present there is nowhere at all to put toiletries apart from the floor.
Also additional hooks in the shower cubicles are needed. At present clothes have to be squeezed onto the single hook along with a towel or thrown over the shower door.
A stool in each cubicle would make dressing much easier too. Trying to put on clothes while standing on a wet floor is quite difficult! I know it is a campsite, not the Ritz, but these additions would make life so much easier.
* More big bins. By the end of the weekend the bins were overflowing and there were bags of rubbish and recycling heaped up around them. This must have created a lot of extra clearing up for the staff.
* Dust from the track into the field blew over everything and was quite unpleasant. Some hardcore or gravel would reduce this problem.
* We thought it was a bit cheeky adding a £5 electricity card to our bill without asking whether we wanted one to that value. The card was changed without a problem but £1 was enough for three days and we still have an unused £1 card for our next visit.
Yes, we will be back. I will come armed with flipflops for the shower, a toiletries bag with a hook, plus a large bag for my clothes. In the meantime my husband is working on perfecting his skill at reversing while avoiding chickens and small children!

WING HALL replies:

Thanks for the informed and constructive feedback! We'll look into these comments with a view to making improvements in time for your return.

The electric card comment is noted: it seems the meters aren't using value as quickly as we thought but GBP1 and GBP5 units should be offered when an electrical hook-up is booked.

Dust is untypical based on previous years and is due to the exceptionally warm weather we've had (although at time of writing, it's pouring down, which will help address it!!).

Hi,

We visited last year when i was 7 months pregnant and it was lovely. It felt very peaceful (bar the chickens on the tables) and picturesque. We thought the farm shop and pub in walking distance were great bonuses.

There was some drama about where the new showers were, so signs could probably be improved, and the discussions at the wash sinks were about rude responses by staff in relation to questions. It did seem busy so perhaps you were understaffed.

There was no record of our booking for electric pitch when we turned up - the admin side of bookings did seem a bit chaotic.

We've booked again for this coming weekend and have recommended it to several friends, but we have already had the same problems with the pitch booking (no confirmation) and some friends who have a disabled child have said that they didn't find staff very understanding when it came to the needs of that child, which are far from unreasonable to accommodate on a camping site as we have camped with them in several sites across the country and it's been great.

I hope you continue to do what you do well and iron out the other things without losing your charm.

WIng Hall Replies: Sorry that your friends found staff less than helpful with their child. We're a welcoming site, but by it's nature, surfaces are uneven and facilities basic.

Thanks for your comments about the charm; many people keep coming back and we're always trying to improve things (including the admin!). Hope you come again.

we have just got back from 2 nights at wing hall & really loved this site.

when we checked in we were asked if we would like to be in an adults only field as there was only the two of us & that suited us just fine, we were told where to go & to pick any pitch that we wanted.
the views from this field were lovely, all we could see was rolling hills & fields, & it was so quiet.

we stopped at the varanda & had afternoon tea, we had a pot of tea, two homemade scones each cream & jam & it was really good, it really is a lovely setting overlooking the gardens.

we bought a few bits from the farm shop, the pate's were especially good.

the toilets & showers were fine, it was a little bit muddy over the wk end so obviously the floors got dirty, i saw staff cleaning but as soon as someone walked on the floors they were dirty again which couldnt be helped, my only grievance was with other campers, why on earth dont they use the bins provided?? toothpaste tubes etc etc left on the basin edges, use the bins!!!
also one evening i went to use the loo & a man was in one of them with the door wide open & his young son (maybe 8) was doing his business just outside the toilet block (there were free toilets) i could't believe it.

i think we have found our little gem of a campsite & not too far away from home, we have already booked our next visit

thankyou very much

Lovely location, lovely deli-esque farm shop, nice bar/sitting room, decent sized pitches, no tent size restrictions, lovely free range eggs, delicious bacon, showers clean enough, plenty of toilets, decent pot wash area, glorious beer garden...

Downsides: pricey bar, check-in is in farm shop and so queues for both were frequent - we were also told to bring cash next time as the camping pin machine was on the blink... don't deal in cash so this was annoying, no other gripes.

Out of 10 on my camp-o-metre, a cool 7.5

Sort the check-in and either install an ATM or ensure the pin maching is robust and not broken and the marks go to 9.9 out of 10!!

My wife and I only stayed one night, but we found the staff to be very helpful and friendly. Also we had a very tasty and well presented meal and drinks at the Veranda Cafe-Bar.

We have just spent a weekend at Wing Hall (2nd-4th July) and totally loved it. The campsite is very different and we are already recommending it to friends. We love the roaming chickens too and the eggs are beautiful! There are so many beautiful places to visit around that area too. The statt are extremly friendly and helpful.

An adults only field would have been lovely too as we were frequently interupted by children playing ball games or running around our tent and when you are away as a couple some chillout time would be nice. Thank you for a great weekend and look forward to visiting you again soon Tracey and Rob

WING HALL replies:

Hello Tracey & Rob

Thanks for the feedback. For the 2011 season we've opened an adults only field for the busy weekends, based on your and other guests' feedback. We don't allow large groups in the field and our no music policy seems to help keep it peaceful.

Wing Hall suits some people so glad you are some of them!

Family camping in a caravan with 3 boys for the half term week. Just like to say thank you for a lovely camping experience in such a beautiful relaxed and rural setting. The children had endless enjoyment helping to feed chickens and taking care of an incredibly friendly baby squirrel. We found the facilites on site to be more than adequate. Great campsite, accomodating staff, kids had a fab time. Thanks again.

Just got back from an extended visit to wing hall. we are regulars and have been several times for the past few years having discoved this hidden gem. Intended to spend 3 nights which turned intoo 8!!

we were in the old corn field and the view from there was spectacular!! The farm shop is a marvel with lots of tempting delights and the staff are really friendly and welcoming, really friendly family atmosphere. We came back from our trip well rested and very happy . There are great walks for the dogs and friendly fishermen to chat with. Well worth a visit, I know I will be back there in a few weeks. I just love it x

had a very welcomed stay at wing hall. The staff are very friendly and always happy to help for £6.50 a night per adult you cant go wrong a fantastic place for all. Will be going again later on this year

enjoyed the unique experience of Wing Hall, grass needs to be shorter, loo;s & showers need more care & cleanliness, but this will not deter us visiting again.loved the shop & restaurant.many thanks.

WING HALL REPLIES: Hello Jeff & Pauline and thanks for your feedback. I think you stayed with us over the Bank Holiday when things do get very busy - as a result the loos and showers are checked on a more regular basis but do get used so much more. If there is ever anything not right, or things aren't clean in-between inspections, we do ask people to let us know (there's always someone in the shop); it's only if we know there is a problem that we can sort it out! Glad you'll be coming back - look forward to seeing you then!

Thank you for another lovely weekend at Wing! We all had a lovely time, enjoying the beautiful scenery, the delicious eggs and the much improved showers. Our children had such fun playing on site, making new friends and making the most of the camping experience.
Note to self: bring less food next time and get more stuff from the shop.

From: Louise (Tue 1st Jun 2010 at 11:05)
Good morning, with regard to my recent stay over the bank holiday weekend I thought I would leave some feedback. The site was bigger than I had expected, three fields in total - fortunately we were offered a pitch in the quieter adult only field. However this was a corn field and the rows were not cut very closely, leaving probably three inches of stubble to walk on. We had to dig out many very tough weed roots before we had a reasonably flat surface to pitch the tent on. I pity anyone without a good camping mat! On the positive side the views were lovely and it wasn\'t far to walk to the shower block etc. 50 pence gave a good hot shower and plenty of time to wash and rinse your hair. A small improvement would be to add a mirror to each cubicle. The toilets were basic but servicable although some did not lock properly. The pathway between the field and the shower block was very muddy due to the rain - attention needs to be paid to this as I saw one lady fall over and slipped several times myself. Some gravel or slabs would be an inexpensive improvement. The fishing lakes were very beautiful, although smaller than I expected, and it should be noted that the track leading to them is very uneven. There was a sign indicating that this was being addressed but it should be made clear on your website for those less able who may have to park and make several trips to carry their fishing kit to the lake. To end on a positive note the Farm Shop was very well stocked and I would highly recommend the pork & leek sausages!

Just back from our first camping trip of 2010 at Wing Hall and although we are 'regulars' we just wanted to say how wonderful our weekend was. You are all so attentive and your new shower block is awesome! Our new favourite from the Farm Shop is the fresh pesto and sundried tomatoes which we had over taglitelle and the maltesers shake from the Veranda Cafe was scrumptious! We're already planning our next trip to you, hopefully in July. Thank you to everyone at Wing, you're campsite it the BEST!

It was my first time camping with my partner, it was amazing i really enjoyed it.
I would recommend Wing Hall to anyone, i cant wait to go back shortly. Facilites were excellent, Farm Shop and The Veranda Cafe are awesome.
The staff are so polite and friendly.
I just wanted to say thanks and see you again very shortly.

On a weekend break around Rutland Water, we were intrigued after seeing 2 of the "Farm Shop - Cafe/Bar" signs (in Manton and Preston) so decided to have a look... resulting in a welcome pot of tea sat outside the varandah, and then a second visit for lunch the next day. Excellent food (liked the dressed spinach-leaf salad) and Coltrane on in the background, plus the hens pecking around adding to the entertainment. Full marks for what you're doing at Wing Hall.

Just spent the Saturday night camping with our friends. We found on the site everything we wanted, a lovely shop and cafe that opened early enough for us early birds.
The toilet block and showers are very basic but functional.
I think we will be back when the weather warms up!

We are about to book our third Wing Weekend. I have to say facilites wise this campsite beats any I have been to hands down and we have taken less ardent campers along with us who have been converted. To be able to camp in such a lovely rural setting but with the backup of an amazing farm shop and a cafe serving the most amazing simple but classic food (And a little drink in the evening) is such an enormous treat. I find the place magical. Ok so the showers and toilets are basic...but what else is expected..this is camping!!I give it 5*!To the lady who thinks its expensive, try staying in a country house hotel with this quality of food and surroundings...wing is much more than a camping field!

From: Diana Morgan (Fri 29th Jan 2010 at 11:02)
Sorry but I dont think the prices reflect true camping. 2 adults and electric hookup for a tent - £19.00 per night and then paying for showers on top of that.

sorry So expensive for basic camping

WING HALL REPLIES: Hello Diana, sorry to hear that you think our prices are high. I'd suggest coming to give us a try; many people keep coming back each year!

From: Maggie (Tue 8th Sep 2009 at 15:56)
We would just like to thank you for all your kind attention and free taxi service in our hour of need last weekend. We managed to do what we came for thanks to you all and were taken home via three low loaders. Travelled in style and saved petrol!!! We definitely intend to come back for a longer stay and explore the lovely countryside in your area. Many many thanks again for saving our weekend from being a disaster.

just back from a weekend at Wing which was our base for the burghley horse trials weekend.
we liked the site very much but i am glad to note that some more shower facilities are to be put in. I was reluctant to shower in the colder, windy weather we had over our stay. I hope the new block will be more weather proof. We think you undersell yourselves and felt there was not enough information about the evening menu when we enquired.
however we are already talking about visits to take in the polo next summer and maybe burghley again. I would recommend your site to others but not too many as we like to keep you for ourselves!

From: mark (Tue 1st Sep 2009 at 17:21)
Thank you for the nice relaxing weekend we\\\'ve just spent at wing. We will be coming back next year and hopefully will be using the new shower and toilet block. Loved the Victoria sponge cake sold in the shop and will also be trying the fresh caught trout next time. Only a few little disapointments, one was the amout of wasps although this is not the fault of Wing Hall, the grass was a bit long and could have done with being cut especailly nearer to the Horse field on the first field and finally the showers were not working properly but I\\\'m sure this wont be a problem when the new shower block has been completed. All in all a great time! Thanks

WING HALL REPLIES: Hello Mark, thanks for your feedback. Glad you enjoyed your stay; it was busy on the Bank Holiday so the showers were lacking some pressure. As you saw, we've begun work on the new shower and toilet blocks which we aim to have up and running for the start of the next season. Glad you like the cake - it's a popular choice!

Regards

Lyndon

Just back from the bank holiday weekend...

Large tent pitches, excellent foodie shop, very friendly staff. Coffee and later on beer on the front lawn was the highlight for myself, Billy preferred the chickens.

Thanks for a good weekend, and as only 45 minutes from Northampton we will be back!

From: Chris Higgins (Wed 26th Aug 2009 at 15:45)
We pitched our caravan next to friends on this friendly site. The weather which was excellent made it an enjoyable stay. I can vouch for the quality of the shop and the cakes mentioned by others! The children loved the chickens which set up camp under our van occassionally. It is within cycling distance of the Rutland Water trail which is nice and flat. The only slight problem we encountered was failing showers. You have to use a 50p, which didn't work twice. The owners returned our money but it meant a cold shower. It was fixed later I understand. It is a shame that more capable and adequate shower and toilet blocks aren't available yet at this site. I hope we can return and the owners arrange such great weather again.

WING HALL REPLIES: Hello Chris, thanks for the feedback - glad you enjoyed the stay! Sorry about the showers - as you note, they were fixed as soon as the problem was brought to our attention. You probably saw the foundations have been dug for a new shower / toilet block in the lower field; due for completion in time for next season. Although (sadly) we can't guarantee the weather, we hope to have the new block ready for next season as we're aware this is one area many people would like to see improved. Hope to see you again soon.

Regards

A near distaster of forgetting our tentpoles was averted by the owners kind offer to loan us a tent which was very much appreciated. It is some time since our last visit to Wing Hall and the improvements are fantastic, without compromising the quiet rural feel and atmosphere. The weather wasn't great but made bearable by the fact we could get wine, fresh bread and excellent cheese from the farm shop. We will look forward to our next visit which will be very soon.

Spent a long weekend at the site and had some great weather. The location is ideal and close to walks and cycling in Rutland. The campsite has quite basic facilities and in need of updating. Friendly owners and good farm shop. We especially enjoyed the annual fete which was held in the grounds.
Can be a little noisy from the road and we were disturbed by local youths/other camper's behaviour after visiting the local pub, which was a shame.

WING HALL REPLIES: Sorry you found some people were noisy. If we're informed, we deal with noise on-site straight away, fortunately this is rare. The quiet country lane doesn't generally disturb people, so sorry you had an unfortunate run of luck! Hope you can come back and try another weekend. Generally we let guests have their choice of pitch, unless we're busy, so let us know where you'd like to be next time.

May 20th till the 24th.
This was our first time staying at Wing Hall, so lets start with the good points. The location is great for visiting local attractions. The Shop, the Cafe and all the staff and owners are realy very friendly. The bad POINT. We stayed over a Bank Holiday weekend, so all 3 fields were full of tent and caravans, the down side to this is that there are only 3 male & 3 female toilets and 2 male showers and 3 female showers, if you are camping take a bucket, as you will be queing to use the loo.

WING HALL REPLIES: Glenn, sorry you found it so busy, but you'll appreciate that good weather on a Bank Holiday is so rare that everywhere gets busy! Having said that, the pitches are big and it was a quiet site over the weekend, despite the number of people. Also, apologies for the fact you didn't see the signs for the other toilets. We have 3 male and 3 ladies toilets, plus an additional 6 unisex toilets at the rear of the same block. We've put new signs up as we're aware some people have missed them. In addition to the new block, which have an extra 2 male, 2 female facilities, there shouldn't be a need to queue. All our showers are unisex, and we've begun work on a new block to be completed this year. We've amended the information we provide at check-in following your comments about the toilets. I should note that on most weekends there is never a queue for anything!

Thanks.

Just back from yet another wonderful relaxing weekend at Wing Hall and just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone at Wing, we had a great time - your new shop is fantastic and well stocked with lots of local delights! The home-made pate was out of this world and our daughter confirmed that the brownies were the best she\'d ever tasted! She also loved feeding the chickens who, as always, produced the tastiest eggs ever!
See you again soon!

Myself and my cycling-buddy (both 18) have stayed at this campsite twice now; both times we were treated with respect and equality in spite of the less favourable stereotype people of our age are known for! Exactly what I'd want from a site; good facilities, well kept but adequately undeveloped land.

A deeply tranquil and rural park set in the grouds of an old manor house. The three grassy fields with attractive borders of mixed, mature deciduous trees have exceptional views across the Rutland countryside and are within one mile of Rutland Water. Children and tents are very welcome to a safe environment with space to roam. I am pleased to grant a rating of 2 Pennants and a quality score of 70%.
